I-80/I-680/SR-12 Interchange Project

The STA and Caltrans are working on the Project Approval / Environmental Document (PA/ED) phase of the project, expected to be completed in the Spring of 2008. Recent work on the interchange includes auxiliary lanes built between I-680 and SR 12. Design and construction of the interchange will be conducted in phases between 2007 and 2030.

The project was completed in November 2009, adding over eight miles of HOV lanes in both directions and widening the median on I-80 from approximately Red Top Road to Airbase Parkway. The HOV lanes are now open from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday for vehicles with 2 or more occupants.

As a busy trade, travel and commuting corridor, there are approximately 150,000 vehicles traveling on Interstate 80 each day. This number increases to more than 200,000 vehicles per day through the City of Fairfield. The new carpool lanes will enhance capacity by encouraging motorists to rideshare and reduce the number of vehicles on the highway.

HOV lanes play a crucial role in helping to support more sustainable transportation choices by providing an incentive to carpool, vanpool or take a bus. This Proposition 1B Corridor Mobility Improvement Project (CMIA) was the first CMIA project in the Bay Area. In addition to the carpool lanes, this project also provided a new concrete median barrier and wider bridges to accommodate the new lanes.

Caltrans programmed over $140 million of State Highway Operations and Protection Program (SHOPP) rehabilitation projects for I-80 between Vacaville and Vallejo. This project started in Fiscal Year (FY) 2007-08 with work in the cities of Vacaville and Vallejo, and occurred concurrently with the construction of the new I-80 HOV lanes project.

The rehabilitation project provided a new concrete median barrier and wider bridges to accommodate the new lanes.  A ribbon cutting ceremony for the new carpool lanes and three paving rehabilitation projects completed in 2009 was held on November 5th in Fairfield.
